Rapidly increasing Fake forest in Thailand
Thailand is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world. The forests in Thailand has been rapidly destroyed by human activities, the primary forest in Thailand that still exist being replaced by monoculture plantation, such as Para-Rubber. The habitat destruction is a huge threat to the biodiversity of Thailand.
Many organizations in Thailand are concerned about the problems of climate change and global warming, and they try to resolve these problems by growing new forests by so-called "reforestation". They grow any plants species everywhere (even in primary forest), thus the biologically diverse forests are replaced by ugly and low biodiversity forests.
It is such a pity that there are very few scientists in Thailand concerned about the ecological point of view. Even through grassland and stunt vegetation are lower alpha diversity than the lowland evergreen forests, but the species turnover between the habitats influences diversity at the large scales (beta diversity). Each native plant community is uniquely composed of different species and there are many diverse types of ecological systems, all of which should be conserved.
In recent years, reforestation projects and the development of forest-related organization in Thailand are increasing, but the biologically diverse forests continue to be lost. In my opinion, even if the reforestation projects may resolve some environmental problems, they may have tremendous negative impacts on biodiversity, while the deforestation can actually benefit biodiversity: the destruction of exotic plants will greatly benefit the native plant diversity. Nowadays, the situation of global and local biodiversity is still under serious pressure and faces grave risks. Many species of plants and animals are still threatened with extinction.
It is a fact that the natural forests are not conserved, and the fake forests established by reforestation project are increasing. Fake forests seem more ugly and harbours lower biodiversity than some cultivated agricultural lands, such as rubber plantation.
As above mentioned, the following questions are:
How do we help the beautiful and biologically diverse forests?
Should we conserve real forest or fake forest?
