It depends on the gender of the genus. For example Schistura [McClelland] is feminine by gender so the species name such as spilota ends with -a instead of spilotus. On the other hand Nemacheilus [Bleeker] is masculine so the species name such as binotatus can end with -us.

I may be wrong on this but in case of person's name it may also depend on the person's gender too such as fangfangae, smithi, etc. For male it should be -i and female -ae or -orum.
