Anyone knows about Plakads in Vietnam? Please give me some info. Thanks.

In South Vietnam here are both feral splendens and wild splendens similar to wild splendens from Srakao in Thailand.  It is also possible for Betta prima or something similar to occur in South Vietnam too, since they are in Eastern Thailand and supposely from Cambodia.

Pic from FAMA magazine July 1990.  What do you think of the fish below?

More.  The gill cover bands seem to be not as clear-cut as other wild splendens.

It is possible that some bred splendens [from many ornamental fish farms - Now many ornamental fishes such as discus, livebearers, barbs, bettas, etc. are exported from farms in Vietnam - and maybe gambling[?]] are released into the wild and mix up with wild splendens too.  And of course there may be some marketing tactics...  I've seen some long body Plakad Indo sold as Cambodia wild betta...

BTW the short fins are caused by fighting and the fins are in the process of growing back ^_^

The one named Betta taeniata in that book?  The figure shows betta with long point caudal fin.  Does prima have point tail like that?

If I remember right in other pics Saigon betta does have more red on anal fin base.  May you check in the color xerox I gave you before, Mr. Plateen?

The two Vietnam betta scans from FAMA are written by Gene A. Lucas, Ph.D.  Here is scan from FAMA March 82 article by Sue Liebetrau, Ph.D. [1of2]

The rubra drawing is presumely copied from Regan's work in 1909.  For other species the identity is probably clarified by now.

Can rubra be one of the coccina or bellica - type bettas?  Both are close by and have red bands on opercle.  At least rubra is unlikely to be conspecific with imbellis ^_^
brookloach [7/11/2545]
 ความคิดเห็นที่: 32
For Saigon betta I think the amount of red color in anal and caudal fins are variable, as is in imbellis.  Is the amount of red on the opercle in splendens populations varied more than Srakao vs. any from central region?  Also does anyone have any opinion on the Phuket and imbellis in the scan pics?

In aqualog there is pics of Betta sp. simorum with some red in the position of the bands on opercle.  Also in aqualog too there is some bellica with quite short body ["Muar"].  I agree that coccina-type bettas are a bit too slender to be comparable to rubra ^_^.  Also Regan's figure seems close to the pic of specimens.  It would be interesting why rubra has red bands on the opercle while imbellis close by have green/blue bands.

About Saigon betta only the author knows is the betta in the pic is real or not.  If we assume it is real then do you think it is different from splendens?  Do you think it is from feral splendens?

BTW does Smith's Chantaburi macrophthalma become Betta prima?  And is bellica bellinca or bellica?

According to the database from Fishbase.com, the accepted name of Betta macrophthalma (Raegan, 1910) is Betta pugnax. And the accepted name of Non-Raegan B. macrophthalma is B. waseri krub.
