There should be an experiment on mate choice between Mahachai and Pla kad mor.  Also some test should be done on Pla kad mor's survivalship and ability to spawn in brackish water where Mahachai betta lives.

That is a good question.  Khun Nonn measured the pH of the water both in the dry and in the rainy season and the value is always above 7 despite lots of mud and rotten leaves.  Khun Nonn, please fill in on this for us.

I think we should study and compare the real wild splendens, imbellis and smaragdina first before tackling Mahachai.  Many people think splendens and imbellis are very closely related and may even be the same species or 2 subspecies.  Smaragdina seems distinct both in color pattern, scaly opercle, and fighting-breeding behavior [figure 8 versus rigid dance].

Some wild splendens don't grow big while a few imbellis I sent to my friend in the US grow into a monster.

I do think that at least splendens and imbellis are different enough to be different species or subspecies.  I am not so sure about the body shape alone however.  See Khun Nonn's article for comparision.

Usually the wild splendens I saw are up to 5-6 cm TL and wild imbellis [not too young] are roughly 4.5-6 cm TL too.
